The coloration and the presence of oats distinguishes this hay from others. Oat hay can vary widely in appearance and oat count, depending on the harvest season. New harvests are generally oat laden, whereas later harvest such as Dec-Feb can be very light, with minimal oats. Many people confuse oat hay with straw due to similarities in coloration. Straw is not a food source, but is typically used for bedding, mostly in the horse and farming communities. Oat hay is an excellent source of fiber and makes a good topping/sprinkle over timothy and orchard hay. SDHRS believes that ALL rabbits are valuable as individuals, regardless of breed purity, temperament, state of health, or relationship to humans. The welfare of all rabbits is our primary consideration. Except for unique situations, in which wild animals are being nursed or rehabilitated, it is in the best interest of wild rabbits that human intervention be held to a minimum. Domestic rabbits are not the product of natural selection, but rather of human interference by means of breeding programs, and the product is a human-dependent animal who needs protection. It is therefore a human responsibility that these animals be cared for in a manner appropriate to their needs. It is in the best interest of domestic rabbits to be neutered or spayed, to live indoors in the home where supervision and protection are provided, and to be treated for illnesses by rabbit-experienced veterinarians. Domestic rabbits are companion animals and should be afforded at least the same individual rights, level of care, and opportunity for longevity as is commonly given to dogs and cats who live as human companions. Rabbits are intelligent, social animals, who require mental stimulation, toys, exercise, environmental activity and social interaction from, as appropriate, people, other rabbits, or other animals. https://sandiegorabbits.org/available-rabbits daily 0.75 2024-08-22 https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/63c1aca3dfd83d7d89495005/881b87ec-960e-43c3-8853-758ce22d52e5/IMG_7131.jpg Rabbits Ready For Adoption How SDHRS finds a friend for your rabbit With RHDV2, and Covid19 precautions in place, we have developed a new system for bonding bunnies safely at our facility: First, your rabbits must be spayed or neutered for at least one month prior, must be vaccinated for RHDV2 at least 18 days prior, and must be kept indoors 100% of the time. We will schedule a time for you to drop off your rabbit at SDHRS for the day, during which time our bonding specialists will do a series of bunny speed dates to work on socialization and to determine which of our adoptable bunnies your rabbit likes best (we can start with the bunnies of your choice). Day dates are 10:30am drop off and 5:00pm pick up. We will continue with these day-dates (depending on the counselor’s availability) for as long as needed for your rabbit to become comfortable around another rabbit. Once we have determined which pairing seems the most promising, we can schedule a time for your rabbit to stay at SDHRS for at least two weeks, to work on bonding dates with them each day and house them in side-by-side pens. During this time we will give you updates and we can do zoom meetings so that you can see their progress in real time. At the end of the two weeks we will send the bunnies home with you to continue the bonding process, or you can opt to keep them at the shelter longer to further cement the bond. We will give you instructions for how to continue the bonding process at home, and will be available for guidance throughout the process. We use the Medgene Labs RHDV2 vaccine, which requires a two-shot series for full effectiveness. This series includes an initial vaccination followed by a booster dose 21 days later. Both shots are required for vaccine efficacy, and full protection is achieved 14 days after the second dose. Rabbits who have already completed the full two-dose series in the past may be eligible for a single-dose booster, as long as they are still within the expiration date of the second dose from the previous year. Additional information about the vaccine is available on Medgene’s RHDV vaccine page. When you schedule the initial vaccine appointment, you will automatically be scheduled for the booster appointment at the next available clinic date. Clients who register for the first dose must return for the booster vaccination. Please do not sign up if you are unable to attend both appointments, as completing the full series is essential for your rabbit’s protection. The total cost is $80 for both required doses. Payment is due at the time of scheduling and is non-refundable.
