Adopt From a Rescue or Shelter
Rabbits get dumped in the wild by misinformed people who think they can live with the wild bunnies. They are also dumped at shelters due to children losing interest in them and people who have had the misconception of them being easy starter pets. There are so many bunnies available for adoption; purebred, big, small, and many personalities and breeds. San Diego House Rabbit Society has many bunnies to choose from at our Adoption Center. We offer a wealth of resources to adopters, including information on how to choose a rabbit companion, classes on behavior and care, supplies to house your bunny in comfort, and grooming and boarding services for your bunny. Your adoption will include a rabbit that is already spayed or neutered, vaccinated and litter box trained and a FREE "new bunny" checkup with a participating veterinarian.
There are many animal organizations to choose from. So that you have the best experience possible, consider the information below when selecting an animal rescue from which to adopt.
The rescue is organized is a 501(c)3
If foster homes are not available, or adequate space is not available, the rescue does not pull from a shelter. Overcrowding or hoarding is carefully avoided.
If an adopter wants to return the animal at any time post-adoption, for any reason, the animal is taken back into the care of the rescue but does not require the animal be returned to that specific rescue or shelter.
The rescue provides postadoption support to owners, including referrals to local, certified, experienced, qualified, reputable, humane, and ethical trainers.
The rescue provides adoption counseling in order to assist owners in finding companion animals that fit their lifestyle, but does not raise unreasonable barriers to adoption.
During adoption counseling, the rescue strives to ensure the humane treatment of the animal once in the home.
The animals have regular care from a vet and emergency care is provided. All animals are vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and a “normal” level of additional veterinary care is provided. Measures that go above and beyond what a typical owner might spend on their own rabbit are not employed. Medical decisions factor in the financial well-being of the organization, as well as the long-term potential outcomes for the animal, once adopted.
Humane and reasonable euthanasia decisions are made, when necessary.

No cages here — the Center houses its adoptable rabbits in roomy exercise pens (aka x-pens) with toys, a large litter box with hay, food and water bowls and more. Bunnies get plenty of run time in roomy play areas and staff and volunteers give them lots of love and attention.
The Center includes a housing area for the rabbits, a laundry room, an intake (quarantine) room, an out-to-play area for the bunnies, a break room for staff and volunteers, and the Bunny Supply Store which sells supplies for house rabbit companions.
The Adoption Center needs volunteers and rabbit sponsors - for a recurring donation of just $30 per month, you can virtually adopt a needy rabbit and ensure he or she has everything needed to make life comfortable. To learn more about monthly sponsorships email sponsor@sandiegorabbits.org.
If you'd like to volunteer, contact volunteer@sandiegorabbits.org and complete our online volunteer application under the tab "Volunteer." Two shifts are available each day: 10:00am to 2:00pm and 2:00pm to 6:00pm. Check our calendar of events for upcoming Volunteer Information Session dates.
