Hay Packer and Animal Care Assistant

Job Hours:
Hours can vary between 8:00am to 8:00pm from Sunday to Saturday – Current shift: 10:00am to 6:00pm, 10:00am to 2:00pm or 2:00pm to 6:00pm depending on the needs of the shelter at the discretion of management.

Position Summary
Primarily responsible for hay packing 45-50 boxes or more of hay each shift. As needed, the general care and maintenance of the shelter and shelter animals including feeding, cleaning, disinfecting and grooming. As needed, packing store orders. Work cohesively with all areas of the organization to meet the mission, vision and goals of the organization are met as it relates to care of the animals.
General Duties & Responsibilities
Responsible for hay packing 45-50 boxes or more of hay each shift.
As needed, complete daily cleaning routines in a timely manner, maintaining assigned area in a clean, organized and professional manner.
As needed, learn and follow infection control procedures for potential or known illnesses.
As needed, maintain supply of fresh water, appropriate food and clean bowls.
As needed, monitor the health of shelter animals; follow established procedures if symptoms of illness arise based on the degree of illness or injury.
As needed, transport rabbits to and from shelter to vet offices.
As needed, transport rabbits from animal shelters to SDHRS.
As needed, under the supervision of the Team Leader, oversee stocking and arranging of inventory in the Bunny Store and Adoption Center.
As needed, under the supervision of the Team Leader, pick and pack orders for customers and aid in store-side pick-ups.
Work with management team and other staff members to assure the highest of standards in day-to-day shelter and retail store operations.
Communicate effectively and professionally with co-workers, management and the public at all times.
Participate in our Culture of Philanthropy by creating and promoting community outreach and fundraising events for the organization and educating guests on our lifesaving programs and inspiring them to donate
Assist management with special projects as needed.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
No direct supervision but has the responsibility for volunteers working in the animal care areas
Qualifications
Education, Skill, Experience:
High school graduate or equivalent. One year experience working with animals in a shelter, kennel, vet clinic or volunteer environment strongly preferred. Working knowledge of rabbits, general care and behavior related information. Must be independent worker with good organizational skills, ability to multi-task and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Must be able to complete and pass required training when provided by SDHRS.
Physical Requirements:
Individual will frequently be required to stand and walk for 4-5 hours at a time to complete routine. Will sit, talk, listen, stoop, bend, squat, kneel, grasp, grip, put fingers together firmly and reach above and below shoulder level; lift and carry up to 50 pounds of materials and lift, push, and pull up to 100 pounds for situations of lifting food and animal care supplies. Respectively use hands to operate computers, flex neck upward and downward; twist the neck and waist.
Dress comfortably and wear closed toe shoes.
Must wear SDHRS uniform
Work Environment:
Will work primarily on site at SDHRS facility, with occasion for off-site special/community events. There is a potential of exposure to parasites and infectious diseases that can be carried and transmitted by animals. Work with cleaning/disinfecting solutions typically used in an animal shelter.
